What this workshop sells is hours of looking, and it is worth being blunt about that because it is unusual. A leak in an air conditioning system and an intermittent electrical fault are both found by measurement and elimination, not by fitting a part and hoping, so the figure on the booking form buys you a defined block of diagnostic time and a written answer at the end of it.
What that figure is not is a repair. Once we know what the fault is, you get one price for putting it right, with the part named, and nothing is ordered or fitted until you have said yes. If the answer turns out to be something we do not do, you pay for the diagnosis and we tell you who does.
A repair figure is an estimate until the part is off the car. On a fifteen year old loom a connector can break while it is being separated, and a bolt on a compressor bracket can shear. Neither is anybody's fault and both change the number, so both stop the job for a telephone call rather than appearing on the invoice.
We do not sell sealants, leak stoppers or anything else poured into a system instead of a repair, at any price, to anybody.
One Saturday morning, six places, half an hour each, and at the end of it you know what you are dealing with.
This exists because of the customer who has already been to three garages about a fault that comes and goes, has had two parts fitted that did not fix it, and is now being told it is the computer. Usually it is not the computer. Usually it is an earth strap, a connector full of green powder, or a relay that only fails when it is hot.
In half an hour we can read the car's own stored faults, put a meter on the obvious suspects, wiggle the looms that are known to crack on that model, and tell you which of three things you have: a fault we can find in an hour, a fault that needs the car for a couple of days, or a fault that belongs to somebody else entirely and here is who.
No work is done in the clinic and nothing is sold at the end of it. The fee is a third of a diagnostic hour and it comes off a diagnosis booked on the day.
Bring the car with the fault happening if you can, and bring your notes: when it happens, in what weather, hot or cold, moving or standing. Those notes are worth more than the first twenty minutes of anybody's measuring.
