What it costs

⃂ 550.00 Per booking

Nothing is paid on this website. You pay at the bay when you collect the car, in cash or by transfer.

What this workshop sells is hours of looking, and it is worth being blunt about that because it is unusual. A leak in an air conditioning system and an intermittent electrical fault are both found by measurement and elimination, not by fitting a part and hoping, so the figure on the booking form buys you a defined block of diagnostic time and a written answer at the end of it.

What that figure is not is a repair. Once we know what the fault is, you get one price for putting it right, with the part named, and nothing is ordered or fitted until you have said yes. If the answer turns out to be something we do not do, you pay for the diagnosis and we tell you who does.

A repair figure is an estimate until the part is off the car. On a fifteen year old loom a connector can break while it is being separated, and a bolt on a compressor bracket can shear. Neither is anybody's fault and both change the number, so both stop the job for a telephone call rather than appearing on the invoice.

We do not sell sealants, leak stoppers or anything else poured into a system instead of a repair, at any price, to anybody.

An hour in the diagnostic bay on the commonest electrical complaint there is, and it splits into four faults that feel identical from the driver's seat.

We test the battery under load rather than at rest, because a battery that reads twelve point six volts sitting still can collapse the moment it is asked for anything. We measure what the alternator is actually putting out at idle and at speed, and the voltage drop across every cable and earth strap between it and the battery, which is where salt does its work. We measure the current the starter draws while it cranks. And we check what the car is drawing while it sits with everything off.

That last one is the parasitic drain, and if that is your fault this hour will not finish it: a drain is found by pulling fuses one at a time and waiting, which needs the car overnight. We will tell you that at the end of the hour rather than at the end of the afternoon.

Bring the battery if somebody has already changed it, and bring the old one too if you still have it. Twice a month the answer is a brand new battery that was never any good.
