Collection is Sunday and Wednesday mornings from half past six, one round, the whole island, finished before eight.
Two bags. Green waste, which is most of what this island produces, goes separately and goes to the compost yard. Everything else goes on the other round.
The household fee is thirty rufiyaa a month and has not changed in six years.
The compost yard is the part worth explaining. Green waste from the households and the plot trimmings are turned there in eleven bays, and the compost goes back to the growers free, by the trailer load, in the two months before planting. It replaced a burning pit, and the year it opened the council stopped receiving complaints about smoke entirely.
Not collected: building rubble, furniture, mattresses, batteries, oil and anything a man cannot lift alone. The tractor takes a load for one hundred rufiyaa, booked at the office, and the council would rather do it cheaply than find it dumped at the east end, which is what used to happen.
Plastic and tins are crated and go off the island on the produce boat's return trip four times a year, which is an arrangement the council made with the boat owner and pays nothing for. Nobody should be burning plastic in a yard. On an island this small the smoke reaches everybody.
