Household collection is Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from six in the morning. Food waste, bottles and tins together, everything else separately. Two bags, not one. Garden waste goes on the Thursday round.
The household fee is fifty rufiyaa a month.
Guesthouses are collected every morning including Friday, because a bin that sits for a day in a kitchen with forty covers in it is a different matter from a household bin. The rate is eight rufiyaa per occupied bed per week, taken from the monthly return, which is why the return matters. A guesthouse with twelve beds half full through the low season pays about half of what it pays in February.
Bottles are the real problem here and they are handled separately. Glass is collected from guesthouses on Monday, crated rather than bagged, and the council sends it off the island four times a year. Crates are lent free and there are never enough of them in high season, which is a standing complaint and a fair one.
Building waste, mattresses, old air conditioning units and engine oil are not on any round. The tractor is booked through the office at one hundred and eighty rufiyaa a load. Oil and batteries are taken at the council yard.
