Rasgefaru Council An island of one thousand three hundred people and fourteen guesthouses, and the arrangements that keep both working

The visitor beach, the screen and the changing rooms

Two hundred metres screened and serviced on the east side, a third of it paid for by the guesthouses, and the argument it ended.

The visitor beach, the screen and the changing rooms

Before this there was no arrangement at all, which meant the arrangement was made every day on whichever beach a visitor happened to walk onto, and a dozen uncomfortable conversations a week.

The project took the east side stretch behind the sports ground: a planted screen and fence along the landward side, two changing rooms, two fresh water showers, six shaded platforms, bins emptied twice daily in season, and signs in four languages at both entrances. The path was widened and lit as far as the sports ground.

The guesthouses paid a third of the cost. They had been asking the council for somewhere to send people, and the council's position was that a beach the businesses wanted should not be paid for entirely by households that would rarely use it. Both parts of that were argued about for a month at open meetings and the split was agreed eleven votes to four.

What it settled. Complaints about dress on the beaches went from about two a week at the office to four in the whole of last year. What it did not settle is dress on the village roads, which is a separate arrangement and still needs the printed cards and the desk explaining it.

The residents' condition was that the north end stays for island families, and it does.
