Questions we are asked often

When do grade one admissions open, and who can join?

November, for children who turn six before the school year begins. Come to the office any working day in that month and allow twenty minutes.

Bring the child's birth record, the immunisation card, and a letter from the council confirming the address if the family has moved to the island recently. The child does not need to come, and there is no test of any kind for grade one.

We are moving to the island in the middle of the year. Can our child join?

Yes, at any point. Come to the office with the report or transfer paper from the previous school if you have one, and do not wait until the start of a term.

A child arriving mid year is assessed in reading and mathematics in the first fortnight, not to place them in a lower grade but so that the support room can help with the gap between two syllabuses. Children moving between islands are the commonest reason for a real gap and it is easier to fix in the first term than in the third.

What happens after grade ten?

Children finish with us at the end of grade ten. For grades eleven and twelve they go to the school on the neighbouring island, about forty minutes on the school boat.

We hold two meetings for grade ten families about it, covering the boat, the subjects offered there, and the hostel arrangement for children who stay over during the week. Ask for those dates at the office in the second term rather than the third.

How are grade nine subject choices made?

At the end of grade eight. We offer a science combination, a business and commerce combination and a general combination, and every child takes Dhivehi, English, mathematics and Islam whichever they choose.

There is a parents' meeting in the second term of grade eight, a written note home about what each combination leads to, and a conversation with the class teacher for any family that wants one. We will not push a child into science because their marks allow it.

What are the school hours, and what happens in the afternoon?

Half past seven until quarter past one, Sunday to Thursday. Two breaks.

Clubs and sport run on four afternoons until half past four and are free. A child may join two. The walking groups and the school boat are arranged so that no child from the far end of the island goes home alone in the dark during the wet months.

How do I reach my child's class teacher?

The Wednesday parent hour, eleven until noon, with no appointment. Come to the office, ask for the teacher by name, and somebody will find them.

Otherwise write in your child's message book, which the class teacher reads every morning and answers by the next day. Anything urgent should be a telephone call to the office rather than a note, because a message book is read once a day.
