Questions we are asked often

How do I know which level to start at

Take the placement test. It is forty five minutes, it costs nothing, and you are told your level on the day out loud with the reason for it.

Do not guess, and be careful of choosing by what you can read. Most people write above where they speak, and a class placed by somebody's paper leaves them silent for twelve weeks.

What are the six levels based on

They are ours. We number them one to six and describe each one in plain terms on the course page rather than borrowing labels from anybody else's framework, because those labels get used loosely and a student reading them cannot tell what they would actually be doing in the room.

Level one begins at the alphabet and the present tense. Level six is people who can already hold a conversation and are there for accuracy and writing.

Can I join a course that has already started

In the first week, yes, if there is a place. After the first week, no, and that is firm.

A class of fourteen moving through sixty hours together cannot absorb somebody in week five without slowing down for them, and the person joining spends the rest of the course behind. The office will put you on the next intake and tell you the date.

When do I pay and can it be split

Nothing is paid on this website. The office confirms your place and your level, then the fee goes by bank transfer or in cash at the office outside the closed hours between noon and four.

A course may be paid in two halves with the second before week six. An employer paying for staff should ask for a company invoice before the intake starts, because a student receipt is not something a finance department will accept afterwards.

What happens if I miss classes

Attendance is taken every session. Below eighty percent of the hours there is no certificate, and you receive a letter stating the course and the hours you did attend instead.

Students think that is harsh until it is put the other way round: the certificate is worth something to the people who hold it precisely because we do not issue it to people who were not there.

Can I get the fee back if I withdraw

In full before the second week. After that, no, because the teacher and the room are committed for all twelve weeks whether a seat is filled or not.

If you are leaving the country partway through, ring the office. Your place moves to the next intake at the same level at no further charge, which we can do because it costs us nothing to hold.
