Vashi Scent Studio Eau de parfum built with you in Hulhumalé, one formula at a time

Natural does not mean gentle

Natural does not mean gentle

Several of the materials most likely to irritate skin are entirely natural, and several of the cleanest things on our bench came out of a laboratory.

This is the argument the studio was founded on, more or less, and it is worth setting out properly because the opposite belief is sold very hard.

Start with the claim itself: natural is safer. It is not true in any useful sense. Citrus oils expressed from peel contain compounds that react with sunlight and cause genuine burns on skin, which is why any responsible formula caps them or uses a version with those compounds removed. Several absolutes from flowers are among the most common sensitisers in the whole trade. Certain natural resins and mosses are so restricted by safety bodies that the versions in use today are purified fractions rather than the raw material.

Now the other direction. A great many synthetic materials are single molecules of known purity, which means their behaviour on skin is understood in a way that a natural extract containing three hundred compounds never can be. The musks we use are synthetic, and the alternative is an animal product nobody should be using. One of our woody bases is synthetic and it exists precisely because the tree it imitates is threatened.

None of that means synthetic is automatically better either. Some naturals do things no single molecule does, and a formula built entirely from synthetics can sound flat in a way that is hard to describe and easy to smell. We use both, and the choice is made material by material on quality, consistency, safety and whether making it harms something.

What we actually owe you is not a story about purity. It is the list. Every bottle from this studio carries its full material list, in order of quantity, naturals and synthetics named the same way. A person with a sensitivity can read it. A person who wants to avoid a particular thing can avoid it. A person who simply wants to know what they are wearing can know.

When somebody tells you their scent is all natural and therefore gentle, the useful reply is to ask what is in it. In our experience the answer is either a list, which is worth having, or a phrase like essential oil blend, which is not.
