What it costs

A service here is a price and not an estimate, because a service is known work: known oil, a known filter, a known set of checks and a known length of time on the ramp. A service costs what the form says.
A repair is different and we will say so to your face rather than in small print. On a bike that has spent six years in this air, a bolt can shear while it is being undone and a corroded bracket can come apart in somebody's hand. Nobody can see that in advance, not us and not you, and it changes the number. So a repair booking buys the strip and the look, and the figure comes after it.
When a job grows we stop and ring you. Every time, whatever the size of it, even when it is forty rufiyaa, because the customer who is rung about forty rufiyaa never has to wonder about four hundred.
The old parts go in a bag with your plate number on it and they are on the counter when you pay. Belts especially: a worn belt next to a new one is the most convincing thing in this workshop.
An hour with both wheels off, which is the only way to say anything true about brakes on a bike.
Front pads measured, the disc measured and felt for a lip, the caliper slides worked to see whether they still move, the flexible hose looked at where it flexes, the rear shoes or pads measured, and the cable or the master cylinder checked. Both tyres measured across the tread and the date on the sidewall read, because a tyre with plenty of tread and eight years of sun in it is a tyre waiting to let go.
Everything goes on the sheet in millimetres. Numbers, not the words a bit low, because a number can be compared next time.
The figure covers the inspection plus front pads on the common bikes. The honest part: until the wheel is off nobody knows whether you need pads, a disc as well, or a caliper that has seized on one slide and has been wearing one pad twice as fast for months. You get the figure when we can see it.
And the one rule we do not bend: a brake or a tyre we consider dangerous does not go back on the road. If you would rather not do the work, the bike goes home on a pickup.
