Five technicians and a written history for every unit
We know what we found on your machine in 2022, because we wrote it down.
Why we write everything down
Fini started in 2013 with one technician and a motorcycle, servicing units in one building in Henveiru. There are five of us now, a van, a workshop on Hithigas Magu and about two thousand one hundred units on annual contracts.
The habit that made the difference was keeping a card for every unit. Make, model, capacity, where it is, what was found and what was done, on every visit. It sounds like paperwork. What it means is that when a unit cools badly in its fourth year, we can see that its gas was topped up in 2023 and again in 2024, which tells us in thirty seconds that it has a leak rather than a service problem, and saves a customer from paying for a third top up.
The other thing we decided was to stop selling gas as a repair. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If a unit is low, it is leaking, and the only honest options are to find the leak or to replace the unit. We lost some work in the first two years by saying that out loud and we have kept customers for a decade because of it.
We work on split units, cassettes and small ducted systems. We do not touch chillers, and when somebody rings about one we tell them who does rather than learning on their building.
The technicians
Ismail Shareef
Started with one motorcycle in 2013. Does the load calculations for fit outs and is the one who decided this company would stop selling gas...
Adam Nizar
Installations and pipe runs. If your outdoor unit is above head height with air on three sides, he put it there and argued for it.
Mohamed Ifham
Fault finding and refrigerant work. Owns the nitrogen set and the patience to leave a system on a gauge for an hour.
Aminath Sifa
Keeps the unit cards, books the contract visits before anybody has to remember, and sends the yearly sheet that tells you what each unit wil...
Faults, gas and new units
My unit needs gas every year. Is that normal?
No. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If a unit is low, it is leaking, and topping it up is a way of postponing the conversation rather than a repair.
We pressure test with nitrogen and leave it on a gauge. That hour is the test that settles it, and it is the hour most companies will not spend.
What size unit does my room need?
In Malé, with concrete walls, reckon on about nine thousand units of capacity for a small bedroom, twelve thousand for a normal one and eighteen for a living room with a west facing window. Add for glazing, for people and for equipment.
Bigger is not safer. An oversized unit cools quickly, switches off, and never runs long enough to take the moisture out of the room, which is why it feels clammy.
Where should the outdoor unit go?
Above the height people walk past, with free air on three sides, out of direct afternoon sun if there is any choice, and not under a window somebody sleeps beside. The air coming off it is about forty degrees.
On a wall facing the sea, expect to wash the coil four times a year and expect the casing to show rust within three. It is still usually the only place available, and knowing it is different from being surprised by it.
Do you charge to look at a fault?
250 rufiyaa for diagnosis, which comes off the repair if you go ahead. You get a price before any work starts.
If the unit is not worth repairing we will say so and tell you what a replacement costs. Common parts are on the van; anything else is two to four days and we will tell you which.
Put your units on a contract
1,200 rufiyaa a unit a year for four visits, priority response and no charge for the small parts. Most of our work is contracts and it is why.
