RI Rihiveli School Preschool to grade twelve, five hundred and forty children, and a place for every one of them

Grades nine and ten: two streams

Science or commerce, with the practical subjects available in both, and three practice examinations in grade ten.

Two streams rather than three, which is what a school of this size can staff properly. Science, with physics, chemistry and biology as separate subjects. Commerce, with business studies and accounting. Both take Dhivehi, English, mathematics and Islam, and the practical and art subjects are open to either.

We have one laboratory and a technician who is also a science teacher, so practical work happens in groups of four rather than pairs. It happens every week, and students write their own method and their own results, including the ones that did not work.

Grade ten sits three full practice examinations across the year, in the hall, timed and silent, marked to the real schemes and returned with a breakdown by topic rather than a total. The breakdown is what the last term is planned from, per student, in writing.

For students with a plan, examination arrangements are agreed in grade nine and not in the fortnight before a paper. Extra time, a separate room, a reader or a scribe where that is what the plan says, and the family holds the written agreement. Arranging this a year ahead rather than at the last minute is the whole difference between an arrangement that works and one that is a scramble.

Every grade ten family has a conversation in the third term about grades eleven and twelve here or elsewhere, and we start it rather than waiting to be asked.
