The middle grades are taught in the morning, starting at ten to seven, which is early and is what two sessions in one building require.
From grade six every subject is taught by a specialist, which is the advantage of a school this size: a child here is taught mathematics by a mathematician and science by three separate scientists from grade eight. A school of ninety children cannot do that.
The cost is that no single adult sees a child for more than a few periods a week, which is exactly when a quiet child can disappear. The form teacher and the house system are the answer. The form teacher sees the class every morning, holds the file, and receives a written note every fortnight from every subject teacher about anybody they are worried about. The head of house has known the child since grade one.
Subjects: Dhivehi, English, mathematics, science, Islam, social studies, information technology, and the practical, art and physical periods.
Marks begin to matter in grade eight, because the grade nine stream choice is made partly on them. We say that to the children and to the parents at the start of grade eight rather than at the end of it, and there is a written note home and a meeting about the streams in the second term.
