KA Kaneru Scent House Oud, attars and sprays in Malé, all of them open on the counter to smell
About the shop

A narrow shop, a long counter and a drawer of cards

Three people, a hundred and eighty open bottles, and a rule about never borrowing somebody else's name.

The rule about copies, and why we keep it

Kaneru began as a stall selling attar oils during Ramadan, and became a shop in 2012 when the stall could no longer hold the crowd.

The decision that shaped everything came in the second year. A supplier offered a range priced at a fifth of the famous perfumes it claimed to copy, with the borrowed names printed on a card to be kept under the counter. Every shop in this trade is offered that, and a great many take it.

We did not, and the reason is practical rather than noble. Those descriptions are usually wrong. A customer buys a bottle because they were told it was a version of something they love, wears it for a week, and discovers it is not. They do not blame the supplier. They blame the shop that told them, and they never come back.

So every scent here is named for what is in it and described by what it smells of. Some of them are close to things you may know, because there is a limited number of ways to build an amber, and we will say so in exactly those words. What we will not do is print a name that belongs to somebody else and let you fill in the rest.

What we sell instead is the counter. A hundred and eighty bottles open, two on your wrists, and an hour of your time.

Buying and collection

Ordering, paying and collecting

How do I pay for an order placed on this site?

By bank transfer. The order is held with your name and a reference, and the confirmation screen and email show the account and the amount.

We make it ready once the transfer shows. There is no card payment on this website and nothing here charges you automatically.

Do you deliver, or do I collect?

Collection from the shop on Chaandhanee Magu. We do not run a delivery round in Malé.

For the islands we box the order and hand it to the cargo boat you name, on the sailing day you tell us. The boat's freight is paid to the boat and never appears on our bill.

Can I return a scent I do not like?

An unopened, unused bottle comes back within fourteen days, no argument. An opened bottle cannot, which is exactly why we push so hard for you to smell it on skin first and go away for an hour.

If something is faulty, leaking or was mixed up by us, bring it back however long it has been open and we will put it right.

Do you keep my details or my card online?

The card is paper, in a drawer in this shop. It says your name, what you bought and when.

There is no customer account on this website, nothing to log in to and no order history page. Your order reference is how we both find an order again.

The shop is open until ten

Chaandhanee Magu, Malé. Busiest in the last ten days of Ramadan, and quietest on a Sunday morning.
