KA Kaneru Scent House Oud, attars and sprays in Malé, all of them open on the counter to smell
On Chaandhanee Magu since 2012

Everything on this counter is open, and you are meant to smell it

Oud oil, attars, sprays and bakhoor, sold by people who will tell you when the cheaper bottle is the better one. Nothing here is sold as a copy of anything, and nothing is sealed behind glass.

How this shop works

Four things we do that a sealed box cannot

Smell it on skin, not on paper

Paper tells you the opening and lies about the rest. We put two on your wrists, send you for a walk, and ask you to come back in an hour. Half of what people choose on paper they reject on skin.

Your scents are on a card

Every bottle you buy is written down with the date. Come back in two years having forgotten the name and we will find it. That card is also how island customers reorder without describing a smell over the telephone.

We do not sell copies

Nothing here is described as a version of a famous perfume, because those descriptions are usually wrong and always somebody else's name being borrowed. Our scents are named after what is in them.

Orders are paid by transfer

An order placed here is held with your name on it and a reference. You transfer and quote the reference, and it is ready to collect. There is no card payment on this site.

Why the same bottle smells different on two people

This is the conversation we have most often, usually with somebody who bought a bottle because it smelled wonderful on a friend and finds it does nothing on them.

Skin temperature is most of it. A warm skin lifts a scent faster, which means more of the opening and a shorter life. A cooler, drier skin holds the heavier notes longer. In this climate almost everybody is at the warm end, which is why heavy oils behave here quite differently from how they behave where they were blended.

What you eat and what you wash with matter more than people expect. A strongly scented soap or a hair oil sits underneath everything and changes it.

And then there is the plain fact that you stop noticing your own scent within about twenty minutes while everybody else still does. That is not the scent fading. It is you, and it is the single most common reason somebody applies far too much.

So we do not tell anybody a scent lasts eight hours. We tell you what it does on a blotter, we put it on your skin, and we ask you to come back. It is a slower way to sell a bottle and it is the only honest one.

What customers say

They found my mother's scent from a card written in 2011. I had a surname and a rough decade and they had the rest.

A Aishath Rishfa Customer

I asked for something like a perfume I had seen abroad and was told plainly that they do not sell copies. Then they spent forty minutes finding me something better.

A Ahmed Nashid Customer

I wanted nine diffusers and left with two. Eighteen months later I have had no complaints and a much smaller monthly bill.

What people ask at the counter

How long will a scent last on me?

We will not give you a number of hours, because the honest answer is that it depends on your skin and the weather more than on the bottle.

What we will do is put it on your wrist and ask you to come back in an hour. Oils generally sit closer to the skin and last longer than sprays. Warm skin, which most of us have here, lifts a scent faster and shortens it.

Do you have a version of a famous perfume?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Nothing in this shop is described as a copy or a version of anything, because those descriptions are usually wrong and the customer finds out in week two.

Tell us what you liked about it instead. Say whether it was sweet, woody, fresh or powdery, and we will find you two or three from the counter that go in that direction on their own terms.

What is the difference between an attar and a spray?

An attar is oil with no alcohol in it. It goes on in small amounts, sits close to the skin, lasts longer and does not carry across a room. A spray is diluted in alcohol, opens brighter, travels further and fades sooner.

In this heat a lot of people find oil more comfortable, and it is also the cheaper way to wear something good, because you use less of it.

Can I buy a small amount first?

Yes. Most of the oils are sold in three millilitre bottles as well as twelve, and several of the sprays come in a small size.

We also fill three millilitre samples of anything on the counter for a small charge, which comes off the price if you buy the full bottle within a month.

Come and smell before you spend

An hour on Chaandhanee Magu with two scents on your wrists is worth more than any description ever written, including ours.
