The covered market building

Twenty two stalls under one roof with water, drainage and ice, replacing thirty years of trading on the harbour road.

The covered market building

Fish and produce had been sold on the harbour road for as long as anybody could say, in the sun, with no water and no drainage, and the road closed itself every morning as a result.

The building has twenty two stalls, a washdown floor that drains, water at every stall, an ice machine and a roof high enough to stay cool. It cost less than the council expected because the roof structure came in with the harbour extension materials on the same boats.

Three things were argued about and are worth recording. The traders wanted the market on the harbour road itself and the council put it one street back, which was unpopular for about four months and is now accepted, because the road works. The fish and produce sides were separated by a wall at the traders' own request after the first month. And the short term stalls, which the council insisted on keeping, were the part the traders liked least and are now used almost every week by growers and by the school.

The road is open in the mornings for the first time in thirty years, which was not the purpose of the project and is the thing people mention.
