Vashagandu generates about nine tonnes of household waste a week, and for nineteen years all of it went to an open site at the south end of the island, three hundred metres from the nearest house.
That site is full, it burns without anybody lighting it, and the smoke crosses the school on a westerly wind. The council has been asked about it at every open meeting for four years.
So it closes in March, the new centre takes its place, and the separation scheme is what makes the new centre work rather than becoming a second open pile. A centre that receives mixed bags is a dump with a roof on it.
Every stage of this, including the tender documents and what each stage costs, is published on this site as it happens.
