Questions we are asked often
Why is the price on this site only the machine
Because the other half of the cost depends on your island rather than on the machine, and a single figure would be wrong everywhere except one place.
The barge to Thulusdhoo and the barge to Fuvahmulah are not comparable numbers. Nor is an operator's accommodation for three days against three weeks. Those are quoted, as separate lines, inside two working days of your request.
What is actually on the quotation
Five lines. The machine for the days you asked for, the operator including accommodation and food, the barge both ways, the fuel, and the GST.
Nothing is added afterwards except overtime that your supervisor agreed on the day. If you are comparing a single figure from somebody else, ask which of those five it includes.
Do I have to pay before the machine is loaded
Forty percent by bank transfer on accepting the quotation, and the balance invoiced on the day the machine comes back.
Contractors with an account with us pay on thirty days and send nothing up front. Setting that up takes one email and a company registration number.
Can I hire a machine without an operator
Only if your operator holds a current licence for that class of machine and your site has a supervisor, and we will ask to see the licence rather than take your word for it.
This has cost us jobs and we have not changed it. A thirteen tonne excavator in untrained hands on a plot between two houses is not a risk we are willing to carry.
How long does a day last
Eight hours on site. Time beyond that is charged at the overtime rate on the quotation, agreed with your supervisor on the day.
A day does not include travelling to your island, loading, unloading or the return barge. Those are in the freight line rather than eaten out of your working days.
What if the machine breaks down
If it stopped through no fault of the site, that day is not charged and a replacement goes on the next barge at our cost. A mechanic travels with anything over thirteen tonnes on a job longer than a fortnight.
If it stopped because it was worked outside what the quotation described, we will sit down with the site diary open. That has happened four times in nine years.
