Order before the boat, and it is made up when it lands
A general store on Naifaru. Rice, flour, tinned goods, cleaning things, baby care, and the fresh items that come off the cargo boat twice a week. Delivered around the island, or held at the counter for you.
Four things this shop does differently
Two boats a week
Everything that is not grown or caught here arrives on a cargo boat from Malé. The shop is built around those two mornings and so is this site.
We do not list what we cannot land
If an item is not on the site this week, it is because it is not on the boat. A shop that lists everything and then apologises is a shop nobody trusts twice.
Made up before you walk in
Order here and your things are packed and set aside with your name on them. Collect at the counter or take a delivery round.
Transfer, then it goes out
You place the order, you get a reference, you transfer and quote it. There are no cards on this site and nothing is taken at the door.
A counter, a cold room and a boat schedule
Six things the island uses us for, including the school and guesthouse orders and the shopping people in Malé send home.
The month's dry goods
Rice, flour, sugar, oil, tinned fish and milk powder, in the sizes a household buys once a month.
Fresh things, on boat mornings
Vegetables, fruit, eggs and chilled goods, landed twice a week and gone in two days.
The cold room
Frozen chicken, sausages and chilled milk, in the only cold store on this street.
Household, cleaning and small hardware
Detergent, dishwash, brooms, batteries, rope, torches and the things that go missing before Ramadan.
Baby and personal care
Nappies, baby milk, soap, shampoo and medicines that do not need a prescription.
School, council and guesthouse orders
Bulk lists made up against the boat, invoiced with GST and settled by transfer.
Where we are up to
Some of what we make up
A school kitchen, a guesthouse between groups, and the families in Malé who buy their parents' shopping from a phone.
A school kitchen through an exam term
A fixed weekly list for breakfasts, planned against the boats so that nothing ran out in the middle of a term.
A guesthouse between two groups
A full restock in eleven hours, on the one boat that fell between a departure and an arrival.
Six households in Malé buying for parents here
Orders placed from a phone in the city, made up on the island, and collected by somebody who never touched a website.
What people here say
I order the evening before the boat and it is made up with my name on it by the time I walk down. Before this I was standing at the counter with half the island on a Wednesday morning.
They told me plainly that ordering after the boat means taking what is left. Nobody had ever put it that way. We changed the day we order and the kitchen has not run short since.
I buy my mother's shopping from here on a Monday night. She gets a phone call and walks down the road. She has never seen this website and she does not need to.
The questions we hear at the counter
When should I place an order?
Before a boat rather than after one. An order in by the evening before is made up on the morning the boat lands, and the fresh items are set aside before the counter opens.
Dry goods can be ordered on any day, because those are already in the building.
Why is something on the site one week and gone the next?
Because it came on that boat and then it was finished. We do not leave an item listed once it has run out, and we do not list something we have not landed.
A shorter list that is true is worth more to you than a long one that produces an apology.
Do I need to make an account?
No. There is no sign in on this site. You fill a basket, place the order and you are given a reference.
The reference is how the order is looked up again and it is what goes in the remarks when you transfer.
Put your order in before the boat
Orders in before the evening of the day before a boat are made up on the morning it lands. Everything else waits for the next one.
Ask the counter
If you are asking about an order you have already placed, put the reference in the message.
