We took a table at a weekend market with four hundred two millilitre vials and a rule: nothing larger was for sale, at any price, to anybody.
Several people were annoyed. A few argued. One man offered to pay double for a full bottle of a studio scent he had smelled for ninety seconds, and we said no, which felt ridiculous at the time.
The reasoning was that a bottle bought on a smell at a stall is a bottle somebody regrets, and one regretted bottle in a country this size travels further than ten happy ones.
We sold three hundred and eighty vials over two days. Eleven of those people came back over the following year for a build, and two of them are now on their third bottle. The man who wanted to pay double was one of the eleven.
