Two rooms in 2014, four teachers now
A reading centre in Maafannu, and clear about where a reading centre stops.
Why the classes stay small
The centre opened with two rooms, one teacher and eleven children, and for the first two years it took whoever turned up. Classes reached twenty six and the teaching stopped working. A child reading four lines in front of twenty five others gets four lines a fortnight, and a teacher with twenty six records to write does not write twenty six records.
So the number is fourteen and it has not moved since. It is the reason a term is paid for in advance, the reason there is usually a waiting list for the afternoon hour, and the reason the office will say no to a family rather than put a fifteenth chair in a room.
The other thing that has not moved is what we will and will not answer. We teach reading and recitation. Questions of religious practice are for your own scholar, and every teacher here says so plainly when asked, which happens most weeks. A reading teacher who answers a question of practice because somebody asked politely is how a wrong answer gets passed on with a centre's name attached to it.
What we hold to
No promised amount
Two children of the same age finish a term in very different places.
No rulings
A question of practice is one for your own scholar and we will say so.
A private conversation about fees
Had with the principal, not written on the enrolment, and not raised again.
