Questions we are asked often

Can I bring my own cloth?

Yes, and most of our customers do. You pay for the making only, which is roughly half the price of the same garment in our cloth.

Bring a little more than you think you need: two and a quarter metres for a long sleeved shirt, three and a half for trousers, and add half a metre if the cloth has a pattern that has to match across a seam. We measure what you bring before we cut and tell you if it is short.

How much is an alteration?

A trouser hem is 50 rufiyaa, a waist taken in is 100, a full zip is 120 and shirt sleeves shortened are 80. Jackets and dresses are priced when we see them, at the counter, before anything is unpicked.

There is no charge for being told an alteration is not possible, and we would rather tell you that than take the garment.

Do you take measurements for ladies?

In the ladies section only, by the lady tailor, in the fitting room with the door closed. Never in the main shop and never by anybody else, including when we are busy.

If you would rather not come in, send measurements taken from a garment that already fits you, laid flat with a tape in the photograph. Many of our regular customers order this way.

How long does a suit take?

Three weeks and two fittings. The first is at the basted stage, when the jacket is loosely held together and anything can still be changed, and the second is for sleeve length and the trouser break.

We have made suits in nine days and it costs a rush rate and one of the two fittings. If your date cannot move, come four weeks before it.

Is same day alteration real?

For a hem, a waist, a zip or sleeves brought in before three o'clock, yes, ready by eight the same evening. After three we will tell you whether it is tonight or tomorrow and we will not say tonight unless it is.

Clothes needed for an event that evening go to the front of the queue. Say so when you hand the garment over rather than hoping we will guess.

When should uniform orders be placed?

Three weeks for a first order and two for a repeat, and that is after the sample garment has been approved, which usually takes another three or four days.

We do not take new uniform work in the three weeks before a school term starts. Those weeks are already promised to the schools who booked in the holidays, and taking a fourth order would make all four late.
