Primary tuition is not about getting ahead. It is for a child who has lost the thread and is getting quieter about it every term.
At this age the whole thing is reading and number. A child who cannot read fluently will struggle in every subject for the next ten years and it will be diagnosed as a maths problem or an attitude problem. A child with no confidence in number facts will find every later topic exhausting.
Sessions are an hour, in groups of six, and much of it looks like play rather than schoolwork. Reading aloud, being read to, number games, and a great deal of praise for effort rather than for being right.
We talk to the school where a parent wants us to, and we say plainly when we think a child should be seen by somebody who assesses for a specific learning difficulty. We are teachers, not specialists, and knowing that line is part of the job.
