Ilmu Learning Centre After school tuition in maths, English and science, grades three to twelve
On Orchid Magu since 2013

Eight students to a teacher, and a plan for each of them

Maths, English and science from grade three to A level. We start by finding out what a student actually cannot do yet, which takes one session and changes everything after it.

We do not teach the syllabus again, more loudly

A student who is behind in maths is almost never behind in this year's work. They are behind in something from two years ago that this year's work is standing on, and no amount of repeating the current chapter will fix it.

So every student starts with an assessment, which is one free session and a written page telling you exactly where the gap is. Sometimes the answer is that there is no gap and the child needs practice and confidence rather than tuition, and we say so and charge nothing.

Everything after that is built on the gap rather than on the term.

How we work

Four things every parent gets

Eight students, never more

A class of twenty five is what school already is. If tuition is the same shape, it is the same outcome.

An assessment before anything else

One free session and a written page saying where the gap is. Occasionally it says your child does not need us.

A written report every term

What was covered, what improved, what did not, and what to do in the holidays. Two pages, in plain sentences.

Attendance told to you weekly

You hear from us the same week a student misses a class, not at the end of term.

In their words

What parents and students say

They spent six weeks on rearranging formulas and reading questions, which felt like going backwards and I said so. Her second practice examination answered me better than they could have.

A Aishath Nazeera Parent of a grade ten student, Male

They told us not to enrol her in biology because she did not need it. Any other centre would have taken the money for three subjects. That is why we trusted the rest of the plan.

I Ibrahim Faseeh Parent of a grade nine student, Male

They got my old script and read it with me. I had spent a year thinking I was bad at algebra and I was actually giving up on long questions. Nobody had ever told me that.

Before you enrol

The questions parents ask first

How does my child start?

With an assessment, which is one session and free. You get a written page: what is solid, where the gap is, what we would do and roughly how long it should take.

There is no obligation afterwards, and about one family in fourteen is told their child does not need tuition.

How big are the classes?

Eight students, and six at A level and in primary support. We do not add a ninth.

A class of twenty five is what school already is. A family paying for tuition should be buying something different rather than more of the same.

Can we join in the middle of a term?

Usually yes, if there is a place in the group. Fees are charged from the week you start rather than from the beginning of the term.

In the examination programmes we will be honest about whether joining in the last six weeks is worth it. Sometimes it is, and sometimes the better answer is practice examinations with marking instead.

My child says they do not need tuition.

Bring them for the assessment anyway, and let them read the page with you. A student who has seen where their own gap is behaves completely differently from one who has been enrolled in something.

A student who genuinely does not want to be here is also not going to learn much, and we would rather tell you that after a month than take a year of fees.

Do you talk to the school?

Where you ask us to, yes, and it helps. A teacher's view of a student is worth more than a term of our guessing.

We will also say plainly when we think a child should be assessed by a specialist for a learning difficulty. We are teachers rather than specialists and knowing that line is part of the job.

Start with the free assessment

One session, no charge, no obligation. You get a written page telling you where your child actually is.

Tell us the grade and the subject

And what the last report said, if you have it. That is usually enough for us to know which group to assess for.

We reply to every message. Leave a phone number if you would rather we called.
