Fehi Vilu Spa Massage, scrub and facial rooms in Hulhumalé, by appointment only

Why we keep the gents room behind its own door

It cost us a storeroom and it is the reason half our male customers walked in at all.

When we drew the plans, the sensible layout put all four rooms off one corridor with one reception. We built it the other way, and it cost us the storeroom, which now lives in a cupboard on the landing.

The gents room has its own door off the stairwell and its own small waiting bench. A man can come in, be treated and leave without passing a woman in a towel, and a woman upstairs never passes a man at all. That is not a small courtesy here. For a lot of families it is the difference between booking and not booking.

The therapists work the same way. Two treat women, two treat men, and nobody is moved between them because we are short staffed on a Friday. When we are short staffed on a Friday we close the hour instead, and the booking form shows it as unavailable rather than offering it and apologising later.

We get asked whether this is fussy. It is not. It is the reason the spa is full on a Saturday.
