A customer arrived with a photograph of a famous perfume and asked for two hundred bottles of something as close to it as we could manage, for an event.
It was the biggest order anybody has put on this counter. We said no on the day, which is the only honest time to say it.
The reason is not only that the name belongs to somebody else. It is that those attempts disappoint. We could have got somewhere in the region of the opening and nowhere at all near the rest, and two hundred people would have received a bottle that promised something specific and did not deliver it. Every one of them would have been told where it came from.
We offered to build something of its own instead, in the same family, sold as itself. He went elsewhere, which was his right. We have had the same conversation perhaps a dozen times since and the answer has not moved.
