Four choices, fifteen minutes, and an oil that is yours
Pick the base it sits in, the heart it is built on, one accent and how strong you want it. We weigh it on the counter in front of you, number it, and keep that number so you can have exactly the same oil in ten years.
Four things worth knowing before you choose
Blended while you wait
Fifteen to twenty minutes from your last choice to the bottle in your hand. Oils do settle and improve over the first fortnight, and we will tell you what to expect, but there is nothing to come back for.
Every blend gets a number
The quantities go on a numbered card in the drawer behind the counter. Quote the number, by telephone or in an order, and you get the same oil to the drop. There are eleven thousand of those cards.
Nothing we cannot repeat
If we cannot buy a material reliably, we will not build your blend on it. That rules out a few beautiful things and it is why a card from 2009 can still be filled today.
Paid by bank transfer
An order placed here is made up, held with your reference and collected from the counter. You transfer and quote the reference. There is no card payment on this website.
What the blending counter does
Three generations of the same four decisions, and a drawer full of the answers people chose.
Building your first blend
Four choices at the counter, about half an hour, and a bottle you leave with.
Repeating a blend from its number
Quote the number and get the same oil, to the drop, in any size.
Wedding and Eid quantities
Fifty bottles and up, from one approved sample, with the label wording you give us.
Refills, by weight, in your own bottle
Bring the bottle back and pay for the oil. Between a third and a half less than a new one.
Smelling the shelf, with nobody hurrying you
Thirty eight materials, open, on blotters and on skin. There is no charge and no obligation.
What we will not do
No copies of branded perfumes, no unrepeatable materials, and no blend built while you are already wearing something.
Why we only work in oil
There is no alcohol behind this counter and there never has been, which is a decision worth explaining rather than a limitation to apologise for.
An oil attar behaves differently. It sits close to the skin, which means the person next to you in a taxi is not sharing it. It lasts a great deal longer, because there is no alcohol to carry it off in the first twenty minutes. It uses far less material for the same effect, so a twelve millilitre bottle is months rather than weeks.
It also suits the weather. A spray in this heat opens enormously and then leaves, because heat accelerates exactly the part that alcohol was already accelerating. An oil warms slowly and keeps going.
The honest trade is that oil does not announce you across a room. If what you want is a scent people notice as you walk past, a spray does that and we do not make one. We will tell you so and point you at a shop that does, which happens perhaps twice a week.
The other thing oil cannot do is smell the same on everybody. On a warm skin a heavy base lifts faster. That is why the counter blends after smelling the base on your own wrist rather than from a list.
The counter in numbers
What customers say
They found my mother's wedding blend on a card from 1999 and made three millilitres of it before letting me commit to anything. It was exactly right.
I came in wanting oud for a hundred and fifty staff and was told plainly that a third of them would never wear it. He was right, and the musk was a success.
When a material stopped coming they telephoned me before I ordered rather than swapping it quietly. Then they spent an afternoon rebuilding it and charged me nothing.
What people ask while the scales are out
How long does it take?
The choosing takes about half an hour for a first blend, and the blending itself is fifteen to twenty minutes with the scales in front of you.
There is nothing to come back for. The oil does settle over the first fortnight and generally gets a little rounder, and we will tell you what to expect from your particular blend.
Can you copy a perfume I already own?
No. We are asked most weeks and the answer has been the same for thirty years.
Beyond the borrowed name, the practical problem is that those attempts get near the opening and nowhere near the rest, and the customer is disappointed by week two. Tell us what you like about it instead, in your own words, and we will build something in that direction that is honestly its own thing.
What strength should I choose?
Everyday at fifteen per cent is right for most people most of the time in this climate, and it is what we suggest for a first blend.
Standard at twenty per cent suits an evening or somebody who applies very little. Strong at thirty per cent is for a wedding or for oil worn on clothing rather than skin, and on a warm day it is a great deal more than people expect.
Will it smell the same in two years?
The recipe will be identical, because the card carries the weights. The smell will be very close and not always exactly the same, because natural materials vary between crops.
Rose and sandalwood move the most. When a batch arrives noticeably different we say so and let you smell it before your bottle is filled.
Come and smell the shelf
Thirty eight materials, open, on blotters, with nobody hurrying you. Most first blends take about half an hour and cost less than people expect.

If you are reordering, send the number from your card and the size you want. If you are starting, tell us one scent you have loved and one you could not wear.
