A child's first appointment here is a look and a count and nothing else. We say that to the child at the start and we keep to it, even if we find something, and the something gets written down and booked for another day.
A parent stays in the room the whole time. The chair goes up and down for them to try. If they will not get in it, they can sit on a parent's lap in it, and if that does not work either we stop, charge nothing and ask you to bring them back in a month.
A child who was told nothing would happen and then had something happen is a child who will not sit in a dental chair for twenty years.
