What people tell us

I left with a sheet of paper listing every tooth, what it needed and what it cost. I thought about it for a month and came back. Nobody rang me once.

M Mohamed F Malé

I wrote anxious in the notes and they put me in the back room without me having to explain myself at the desk. Eleven years since my last dentist.

Z Zulfa I Hulhumalé

Rang at nine in pain and was in a chair by half past eleven. They told me the price on the phone and that was the price.

The questions reception answers all day

Why does the form ask me to pick a chair

Because the chair is the thing there is never enough of. Two dentists share three chairs in a session, so a diary that books dentists can promise a time with no room to put it in.

You pick the appointment and the chair, and the confirmation email tells you which chair is held for you. Chair three is the quiet room at the back.

Why are there so few times for a scale and clean

Because it is booked in chair four, which is the hygienist's chair, and she works three sessions a week. Those are the only hours, not a quirk of the form.

They fill about two weeks out. Reception keeps a cancellation list and somebody drops out most weeks.

Can I ask for the quiet room

Yes. Pick chair three on the booking form, or write anxious in the notes and reception will move you into it.

It has a door that shuts, no window onto the corridor and nothing on the walls, and appointments in it are booked with slack after them so nothing is rushed. There is no extra charge.

What does the appointment fee cover

The time in the chair and the dentist looking at your teeth and telling you what they see. That is all it covers.

It is not a payment towards treatment and it does not commit you to any. Anything suggested is written down with a price beside it and only goes ahead when you say so.

Will you start work at the first appointment

No, unless you have read the written plan and asked us to. Nothing is drilled, filled or taken out because it happened to be convenient while you were in the chair.

You leave the check up with a sheet listing what was found, what is suggested, what each thing costs and what happens if you leave it for now. You take that away and think about it.

What if the tooth turns out to need more than was quoted

The dentist stops, explains what they have found and gives you the new figure. Nothing further is done in that appointment unless you agree to it there.

If you would rather stop and think, the tooth is made comfortable and safe for now and you book again when you have decided.

In pain today

Ring reception rather than using the form. One chair is held off the diary in every session for somebody who needs it that morning.
