Branding for a bakery that had to print on a box

A logo, a box, a sticker and a thermal receipt, all from one mark that had to work at fifty eight millimetres wide.

A home bakery becoming a shop, with an existing logo that existed only as an image about five hundred pixels wide, drawn by a friend and genuinely liked by its customers.

We did not replace it. Replacing a mark customers already recognise is a bad trade, so we redrew it as vector, keeping the shape and fixing the things that would have failed: the outline was too fine to survive at small sizes, and the two colours were so close in tone that a single colour version turned into a blob.

The test that drove everything was the receipt. A thermal printer at fifty eight millimetres wide, in black only, at low resolution, is the harshest place any logo has to appear, and if a mark survives that it will survive anything. Two evenings of adjusting weights went into that one condition.

Then the applications: a box, a sticker for the box, a paper bag, a shopfront and the social templates. The box was designed around the printer's actual die rather than to a size we invented, which meant one conversation with the printer before any artwork was made.

The shop opened with everything matching from the first day, which for a small business is rarer than it should be.
