Cargo comes in at night here more often than people plan for, and until last year the eastern wall had one light on it and a slope the tractor could only take at an angle.
Six lights now run the length of the wall, on the same circuit as the harbour office so one switch does the lot, and the ramp has been widened and squared off so a tractor can reverse straight onto it with a trailer behind.
The part that mattered most was not the concrete. Before this, a boat arriving after dark meant men carrying bags up a dark slope, and a good deal of noise on the harbour road at two in the morning. With a lit wall and a ramp, a load that used to take three hours takes about one, and the council has been able to set loading hours that people can actually keep to.
Two complaints since, both about the light nearest the houses, which now has a shade on the landward side.
