Hirimaadhoo Council The island office: notices, services, and the people you can ask
Hirimaadhoo, two thousand one hundred and forty people

The island office, and what it can do for you today

Notices with the date on them, the waste collection days, what the harbour charges, and which desk handles the thing you came about. If it is not here, the form at the bottom of this page reaches the office.

What this site is for

Most of what people come to the office for is one of four things: a letter or a copy from the register, a payment, a question about a plot, or a complaint about something broken.

Three of those four can be started here. The fourth, the plot questions, still needs somebody at the desk, because every case is different and we would rather tell you the truth about yours than publish something general that turns out not to apply.

Everything on this site is dated. If a notice looks old, it is old, and you should ring the office rather than assume it still stands.

How we work

Four things we hold ourselves to

Every request gets a reference

Written down, numbered, and read back to you before you leave the counter. Quote it and anybody here can find your case.

An answer within five working days

Not always the answer you want. But somebody will have told you where your request stands rather than leaving you to ask again.

Open council meetings

The agenda goes on the noticeboard three days before, and residents may sit in. The minutes are kept at the office for anybody to read.

We say when something is not ours

Some matters are decided by offices in Male rather than here. We will say so plainly and tell you where the file goes next.

What people say about the office

I went in about a street light that had been out since Ramadan, got a number written on a slip, and somebody rang me on the Thursday to say the part was on the boat. It was fixed the next week. That is all I wanted.

H Hawwa Saeedha Resident, west side, Hirimaadhoo

The council told me plainly that my plot question was not theirs to decide, showed me what their old record said, and wrote the covering letter. I had been writing to the wrong office for a year before that.

I Ibrahim Waheed Resident, harbour road, Hirimaadhoo

The building took longer than they said and they said why, in a notice, on the board. My daughter has a room with a fan in it now instead of half of the council hall.

The questions the counter hears most

When is the office open, and when is the counter open?

The office is open Sunday to Thursday from eight until two. The payments counter closes at one, because the day's cash has to be reconciled before the office does.

In Ramadan the office runs from nine until one and payments stop at noon. The month's hours go on the noticeboard and on this site a week beforehand.

Do I need an appointment?

No. The counter is first come, first served, and most things are dealt with while you wait.

An appointment is worth making for two things: a plot or boundary matter, which takes half an hour and needs the register out, and anything you want to raise with a council member directly. Ring the office and we will give you a time.

What does a reference number do?

It means your request is in the book. Anybody at the office can then find the whole file rather than asking you to explain it again to a second person.

You get one for every request and every complaint, written on a slip at the counter or sent back by reply. Keep it, and quote it when you ring.

How do I complain about the council itself?

The same way as anything else, and it goes in the same book with a number.

A complaint about a staff member goes to the secretary general. A complaint about a council member or a council decision goes onto the agenda of the next council meeting, and you may attend and hear it discussed. If you would rather your name were not read out, say so and it will not be.

Something broken, or something to report

A street light, a blocked drain, a dog in the school yard. Tell us where it is and you get a reference number the same day.
