What you are booking is time under a microscope, and that is what you pay for. The assessment fee buys somebody opening the phone, taking the board out, washing it if it needs washing, and looking at it at forty times its own size until they can tell you what has died and whether it can be brought back. You pay that fee whether the answer is good news or bad news, and we would rather say so here than at the counter.
Anything beyond the assessment is quoted after the board is under the lens and never before. A price given over the telephone for a board nobody has seen is a number somebody made up. When we have looked, you get one figure and one honest opinion about the odds, and nothing is touched until you say go ahead.
If the board turns out to be beyond us, you pay the assessment and nothing else, and you get the phone back with the board in it and a written note of what we found. That note is worth having: it is what stops you paying three more shops to find out the same thing.
Payment is at the bench when you collect, in cash or by transfer.

This is measurement rather than guessing. The board is fed from a bench supply through a meter so the current draw can be read, and a board that is drawing nothing, a board drawing a steady little, and a board drawing far too much are three completely different faults. Then the lens goes over the charging circuit, the main power line and the places a short usually sits.
Most of these turn out to be one of four things and three of the four are repairable. The fourth is a main processor that has lifted off its pads, usually in a phone that has been bent, and the honest answer there is that nobody in this country is putting that back.
Bring the charger you have been using. Perhaps once a fortnight the fault is a phone that has been fed by something that should never have been plugged into it.
