What you are booking is time under a microscope, and that is what you pay for. The assessment fee buys somebody opening the phone, taking the board out, washing it if it needs washing, and looking at it at forty times its own size until they can tell you what has died and whether it can be brought back. You pay that fee whether the answer is good news or bad news, and we would rather say so here than at the counter.
Anything beyond the assessment is quoted after the board is under the lens and never before. A price given over the telephone for a board nobody has seen is a number somebody made up. When we have looked, you get one figure and one honest opinion about the odds, and nothing is touched until you say go ahead.
If the board turns out to be beyond us, you pay the assessment and nothing else, and you get the phone back with the board in it and a written note of what we found. That note is worth having: it is what stops you paying three more shops to find out the same thing.
Payment is at the bench when you collect, in cash or by transfer.

Book this when you have our written assessment in your hand. If you have not been assessed, book the assessment instead; there is no sensible way to agree to lift a component off a board nobody has looked at, and a shop that agrees to it over the telephone is telling you something about itself.
The work is hot air, flux, a microscope and a steady afternoon. The old part comes off, the pads are cleaned and inspected, the new part goes on and the board is tested on the bench supply before it goes anywhere near a battery.
The figure is for a single component on a board that is otherwise sound. If lifting the old one shows damage underneath that the assessment could not see, we stop, photograph it, and give you the new figure. That happens perhaps one time in eight and it is the reason nobody here quotes a board repair as a fixed price.
