If you ride an automatic scooter, this is the thing to know, and almost nobody does until the afternoon it strands them.
There is a rubber belt and a set of weighted rollers inside the transmission and they wear out quietly. There is no light and no noise. The bike just gets a little slower away from the junction, then it slips on the causeway when you are in a hurry, then the belt goes.
On these roads a belt lasts around fifteen thousand kilometres and the rollers about twice that, and a belt that has done twenty thousand is one you are riding on luck. Changed on time it is ninety minutes and a fair price. Changed after it snapped, it is that plus a tow, and sometimes plus the clutch shoes that have been slipping for months.
We write the kilometres on your sheet when it is done so the next one is not a guess. And we show you the old belt, because a belt that has gone from eighteen millimetres to fourteen looks like a different object altogether.
