People worry about the odometer. On this island the odometer is almost the least important number on the bike.
What actually finishes a scooter here is salt, and it does not wash off in the rain. It sits inside the frame tubes, under the floor panel, in every electrical connector, around the exhaust mounts, inside the rims, in every bolt head. It does not stop between rides and it does not stop in the dry season.
The result is a bike that is mechanically fine and structurally tired: a footrest bracket that shears, an exhaust mount that lets go, a connector that has turned green and makes the indicators do as they please, a rim that has rusted from the inside and will not hold a bead.
One proper wash and treatment a year, two hours in the wash bay, changes that completely. Panels off, fresh water and degreaser into everywhere salt sits, connectors opened and greased, brackets brushed and treated, frame tubes sprayed inside with a wax that creeps into the seams.
It is the least exciting booking on this page and it is the one that decides whether your bike is worth anything at eight years old.
