Questions we are asked often

When does admission open, and who may apply?

October, closing at the end of the month, for students finishing grade seven at this school or at the four eastern island schools. Admission is into grade eight only.

Bring the grade seven report, the birth record and the immunisation card, and say on the form whether a hostel place is needed, because the hostel has sixty four beds and they are allocated at the same time.

Is there an entrance examination?

No. Every student from the five schools who applies in time has a place.

There is an assessment in the second week of grade eight, in mathematics, English and Dhivehi. It is not used to stream anybody, it is not reported as a mark, and its purpose is to find the students who need the support periods and to tell the departments where this year's intake actually is.

How is the stream for grade nine chosen?

At the end of grade eight, from science, commerce and general, with Dhivehi, English, mathematics and Islam common to all three.

There is a written note home in the second term, two parents' meetings, one on a weekday evening and one on a Saturday morning, and a conversation with the form teacher, which we offer to every borderline family rather than waiting to be asked. Changing stream in the middle of grade nine is possible twice a year and is difficult, which is the argument for getting it right.

Can a student join in grade eleven from another school?

Yes, and about fifteen do each year, mostly from schools that end at grade ten.

Come with the grade ten results and the report. The combination is discussed rather than assumed: where the results do not support the combination a family has in mind, the school says so with the paper in front of it and offers the alternative. Hostel places for grade eleven entrants depend on what is left after the returning boarders, so apply in October rather than in January.

What does boarding involve, and what does it cost?

Sunday morning to Thursday afternoon, in two blocks with a warden and two assistant wardens living on site. Roll at seven, half past one, six and nine. Gate closed at eight in the evening. Three meals cooked on site and a laundry arrangement.

Nine hundred rufiyaa a month. Fourteen places a year are held at a reduced rate for families who ask, and that conversation is with the principal and stays there.

What happens if a boarder is ill?

They are taken to the health centre and the family is telephoned before anything else happens, including before the school telephones anybody else.

For anything serious the school arranges a boat at any hour and does not wait to be asked or to be paid. The warden's telephone is answered at night and the number is given to every boarding family at the start of the year.
