The four islands to the east of us each have a school to grade ten or to grade eight, and none of them has enough students in the senior grades to run a science stream or to employ a physics teacher. Between them they have enough for both.
So they send us their senior students. About two hundred and ten of our six hundred and ninety come from off the island: one hundred and forty six by the daily school boats, and sixty four who live in the hostel during the week and go home on Thursday afternoons.
That is what this school is for, and nearly every arrangement described on this site follows from it. The day starts at seven because the boats arrive at ten to. There is a telephone hour for parents who cannot come to the gate. The study hall is open in the evening because a hostel student has nowhere else to work. And every meeting for parents is held twice, once on a weekday and once on a Saturday morning when the boats are running for families.
