Term examinations are in the last two weeks of each term, in the hall and in the two largest classrooms. Timetables go up three weeks before, on the board by the gate, on this site and on paper sent home.
In grades ten and twelve, students also sit three full practice examinations across the year. Real conditions, in the hall, timed, silent, marked by the teachers against the actual schemes, and returned with a breakdown by topic rather than a total. The breakdown is the part that matters: a mark tells a student how they did and a breakdown tells them what to do next.
This school is also the examination centre for the eastern islands, which means that on about eight days a year students arrive from the four feeder schools and the hall, the two large classrooms and most of the staff are given over to it. On those days some classes do not run, and the dates are published on the term card in the first week of the year so that no family is surprised by them.
Students who miss an examination through illness sit it on their return where there is a paper that can be used, and where there is not, the report says what happened rather than recording a zero. A student sitting an examination unwell should tell the form teacher before the paper rather than afterwards.
Stationery is the student's own. The school keeps a small supply for anybody who arrives without, and no student is ever sent out of an examination for that.
