Parking permit renewals open on the first of January, by appointment

Six hundred and forty permits, fifteen working days and twelve slots a day. Slots are open now and the ward is asking people not to queue for this one.

Resident parking permits for this ward renew in the first three weeks of January. Slots for the appointment are open from today, on this site or by telephone.

Why by appointment. Six hundred and forty renewals in fifteen working days is forty three a day, and a renewal takes about eight minutes because the vehicle registration has to be checked against the register. Done at the counter it takes the desk apart, which is what happened in the two Januaries before last. Twelve slots a day, plus the renewals dealt with in the ordinary permit stream when it is quiet, has cleared the whole list in each of the last two years.

What to bring: the vehicle registration, your identity document, the old permit, and one hundred and fifty rufiyaa. If anything about the household has changed, somebody moved out, the vehicle is now in another name at the same address, bring the paper for that too and it will be done in the same slot.

A permit not renewed by the end of January is not cancelled, and it is also not valid, which is a distinction worth understanding. Come in February and it is renewed without any penalty. There is simply no permit in the meantime.

And the sentence this office says more than any other, so it is in writing again. A permit is not a space. There are three hundred and ten marked resident bays in this ward and six hundred and forty permits, and the ward publishes both numbers precisely so that nobody buys a permit expecting to find somewhere to park outside their own door. A permit means you may use a resident bay in this ward when one is free.

Requests to add or move bays are a separate matter and are heard all year. Bring them through a street committee if your street has one, because a committee request is weighed differently and usually better argued.

Slots are ten minutes, three until five, Sunday to Thursday. The diary is open now and the second week of January always goes first, so the ward would rather you took a slot in the third.
