Almost everybody who gave up on it gave up because the mask leaked, and a mask that leaks is a mask that does not fit.
In four years of teaching the snorkel session I have met perhaps two people who genuinely disliked being in the water. Everybody else disliked a leaking mask and decided it was about them.
Here is the test, and it takes five seconds. Hold the mask against your face with no strap at all, breathe in gently through your nose, and let go. If it stays on your face by itself, it fits. If it falls off, it will leak all day whatever you do to the strap, and tightening the strap makes it worse rather than better, because it bends the skirt away from your skin.
The second thing is hair. A single strand of hair across the top of the skirt will let water in continuously, which is why we push the fringe back before the strap goes on. Men with a moustache have the same problem lower down and there is no polite fix except a smear of grease on it.
The third thing nobody tells you is that a mask fills up anyway sometimes, and that is fine. You stand up, or you hold the rail, tip the bottom of the mask away from your face and blow out through your nose. It clears in one breath. Knowing that is the difference between a mask full of water being an annoyance and being a panic.
We fit masks for people who are not booking anything, at no charge, because somebody who gets a mask that fits will snorkel for the rest of their life. Bring the one you own and we will tell you honestly whether it is the mask or the technique.
