Why parasail flights are mornings only

The wind across this lagoon gets up after eleven, and it makes the flight unpleasant long before it makes it unsafe.

We get asked for an afternoon parasail flight most days and we say no most days, so here is the reason in full.

The lagoon on this side of the island is flat and glassy until about ten in the morning. After that a sea breeze fills in from across the atoll, and by noon there is usually enough of it to put a chop on the water and a good deal of movement into the canopy.

At that point the flight is still perfectly safe. What it is not is pleasant. You get a hard landing onto the platform instead of a soft one, the canopy moves around above you in a way that alarms first time flyers, and the boat has to work to hold a straight line. People come down having had a fight rather than a flight, and that is not what anybody paid for.

There is a second reason and it is about the winch. Bringing somebody down onto a moving platform in a chop is the part of the operation with the least margin in it, and Rilwan will not do it twenty times an afternoon just because the diary is full.

So the board only offers flights before eleven, and on a windy morning it offers none at all. Book the first slot of the day if you can, and book it for the first morning of your stay rather than the last, so there is room to move if the weather has other ideas.
