The outdoor coil is the part that matters most here and the part most often skipped. Salt in the air settles on the fins and forms a crust that stops the unit rejecting heat, so the compressor runs longer for less cooling and the bill goes up while the room stays warm. Within two hundred metres of the sea, that coil needs washing every three months. Further into Malé, twice a year is enough.
A dirty indoor filter costs around fifteen per cent on the running cost, which for a unit running eight hours a day is real money over a year.
