Twenty two running feet of kitchen on the fifth floor of a building with no lift and a stairwell that turns twice per floor.
The whole job was designed around the stairwell before it was designed around the kitchen. We took the tightest measurement on the way up, which was a turn of one thousand and ten millimetres, and nothing we built exceeded nine hundred and fifty in its longest dimension. That meant eleven carcasses instead of the seven a lift would have allowed, with joins arranged to fall behind door lines.
The worktop was the real problem. A single laminate top would have been three point six metres and could not have gone up. It went as two pieces with a joint planned over a cabinet division, masked with a colour matched joint strip, and it is in a position where nobody has ever noticed it.
Two carpenters, two days of carrying and three days of fitting. The sink unit and the two units against the wet wall are marine ply, which on this job mattered more than usual because the flat above has a bathroom over that corner.
Six weeks from the drawing. The client's own kitchen shop had quoted four and refused to look at the stairs.
