Sea freight comes with a carrier's liability and it is limited, which is normal everywhere and comes as a surprise to nearly everybody who has not read a booking note.
For cargo worth covering we will arrange cover on the declared value through a broker, priced as a percentage of the value. Electronics, plant, refrigeration, anything fragile and anything that would stop a job if it were lost.
What we will not do is pretend that the ordinary liability is insurance. A load of household goods carried at the standard rate is covered at a figure per tonne that has nothing to do with what the goods cost, and a customer should know that before the boat sails rather than after.
Declare the value honestly. A claim on cargo declared at a third of its worth is settled at a third of its worth.
