Athletics trains at six in the morning on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday, before school and before the heat.
We coach sprinting as a technique rather than as effort. Most children here have never been taught to start, to drive, to breathe or to hold a stride, and the improvement in the first eight weeks of actual coaching is larger than anything that comes later. Distance runners learn pace, which means learning to run the first lap slower than they want to.
Jumps are long jump and high jump only. We do not coach throws, because we have neither the space nor a coach qualified for it, and a badly coached throw is how a child gets hurt.
Athletics suits children who find team sport uncomfortable, and we have a number of children who came for football, disliked it, and turned out to be runners. Trying both is free for a fortnight.
Fees are four hundred and fifty rufiyaa a month for three mornings, which is the same as two football sessions because the sessions are shorter.
