FE Fenmaa Foundation Reading corners in island schools, collection drives, and clean up mornings in the lagoon
Galolhu, Malé

Seven schools have a reading corner. The committee agreed twelve.

Reading corners in island schools that asked for one, collection drives at the store, and clean up mornings where everything is weighed and written down.

Volunteer days and appointments

Reserve a place on a day that already exists

Volunteering costs nothing. Tell us if you cannot come, because boats, gloves and food are counted from the list.

How this foundation works

A target and a state

Every figure here is confirmed by hand, with the date beside it. Nothing counts itself.

No card payment

A transfer, a reference and a receipt. Nothing is collected on this website.

No photographs of children

Not on a trip, not on this site, and no family is ever named.

Goods checked in front of you

Bring them to the store and we will tell you honestly what can travel.

What people say about how we work

The first morning I spent three hours listing books and putting a quarter of them in the waste pile. Nobody photographed any of it. That is when I decided to keep coming.

F Fathimath A Volunteer, store Saturdays

They came and looked at the room before agreeing to anything, and the boxes arrived with a list in them. Neither of those had happened to us before.

I asked what share actually reaches the island and the treasurer gave me a figure from the closed accounts and the date of it. I gave more after that answer than I had planned to.

The questions the office is asked most

Do I need the briefing before I volunteer

Not for a store Saturday and not for a clean up morning. Reserve a place and turn up for either of those.

An island trip needs the briefing first, an hour in a group of ten or fewer. It comes before a first trip rather than after it, because otherwise a new volunteer finds out what the rules are while standing in somebody's school.

Can children come

To a clean up morning, yes, with a parent who stays for the whole morning. The shallow water part is optional and supervised by two adults who can swim, nobody goes past their waist and nobody dives for anything.

The store takes twelve and over with a parent. Island trips are sixteen and over. We cannot supervise children and we will not pretend that we can.

What happens if I reserve and then cannot come

Tell the office as early as you can. Nothing is charged and nobody is told off.

Boats, food, gloves and bags are counted from the list, so a place nobody uses is a place somebody else wanted and a cost we did not need. That is the whole of the reason we ask.

Will you confirm my hours for a course or an employer

Yes. The office will write a letter saying which days you attended and how many hours, with a reference on it, and that reference can be checked with us by whoever you show it to.

What the letter will not do is describe volunteering as employment or as a placement we supervised professionally, because it was neither. We also do not pay volunteers or reimburse expenses.

How do I donate money

By bank transfer to the account on the donations page. Send the reference to the office and a receipt comes back with our own reference on it, usually the same day.

There is no card payment here and nothing is collected on this website. Nobody from the foundation will ever ask you for money in a message you did not start; if somebody does, it is not us and we would like to hear about it.

Can I give every month

Yes, by setting a standing instruction up at your own bank and telling the office so we can match the transfers to a name. It works well and it costs us nothing to administer.

We cannot take a recurring payment ourselves, because we have no mechanism for one, and we would rather say that than build something we cannot run properly.

Ask us anything about the money

Half an hour with the treasurer, free, and he will give you the last closed figure and the date on it rather than a running total.

Or just write

Write to the office

We reply to every message. Leave a phone number if you would rather we called.
