Why the vegetable list is shorter than a supermarket's

We list what came back from the market that morning. A longer list would be easier to sell from and most of it would be a guess.

If you compare our produce list with a supermarket's you will notice ours is shorter and that it moves around during the week. That is deliberate and it is worth explaining, because a short list can look like a shop that has run out.

We buy produce in the morning and sell it that day. What goes onto the site is what came back in the van. If the cucumbers were poor at the market we do not buy poor cucumbers, so there are no cucumbers on the site, and you find out before you order rather than when a bag arrives.

The supply behind this is simple enough to describe. Some things arrive by air and are steady and expensive. Some things come by boat from the atolls and are wonderful for two days after the boat and gone by the fourth. Some things are grown here in small quantities and arrive without warning.

Our job is to tell you which of those you are looking at. When a price on the site moves by a third in a week, that is not us being clever, it is the boat.

A practical suggestion. Order the dry goods on any day you like and order the vegetables on the day you will cook them. The people who are most disappointed by grocery delivery anywhere are the ones who buy a week of salad on a Saturday.
