For adults who never learned to read and have spent years quietly avoiding saying so. That is most of the class and the first evening is largely about getting it said.
It starts at the letters, goes on to joining them, and by the end of a term most people read short passages slowly and correctly. Slowly is deliberate. Speed is not what the teacher listens for and nobody is timed at anything.
Men and women sit separately in the same class, taught by the principal. A woman who would rather be taught by a woman should ask about the ladies afternoon group, which covers the same twelve weeks with a female teacher.
There is no test and no certificate at the end. What there is, if you want it, is half an hour one to one where somebody listens to you read and tells you honestly where you are.
