Hair that behaves in this heat
Forty bottles on the shelf, and every one of them was used on somebody in the chair next door before it went on sale. Tell us what your hair does on wash day and we will write the routine on a card.
Four things that make us different from a supermarket aisle
Tried in the chair first
A product goes on the shelf after we have used it on at least twenty heads over a month. Plenty of things we were sent never got that far, and they are not here.
A routine written on a card
Buying four bottles with no order to use them in is how most of a shelf ends up half full under a sink. Ask at the counter and we will write the order, the quantity and the frequency down.
Small sizes before big ones
Where a product comes in a small bottle we stock it, and we would rather sell you the hundred millilitre one twice than the five hundred once.
We will not promise you hair
Nothing on this shelf stops hair loss, and nothing here straightens hair permanently at home. Anybody selling you either is selling you a story, and the second one burns scalps.
What you get besides a bottle
The advice is free and it is the reason people come back, so we would rather spend ten minutes on it than sell you the wrong thing quickly.
A routine written on a card
The order, the amount and how often. Free, and it saves more money than any discount.
Small sizes, so you can try before you commit
Where a product comes in a hundred millilitre bottle we stock it, even though the big one pays better.
Scalp advice for scarf wearers
The most common complaint in this shop, and it is almost never about the shampoo.
Colour aftercare that is honest about fading
What actually slows fading here, and which products are decoration.
Tools, and the settings nobody reads
Dryers, straighteners, brushes and combs, demonstrated at the counter before you buy.
Oils, used the way they should be
Coconut, sesame and argan, sold by weight and explained without the folklore.
What this climate actually does to hair
Almost every problem walked into this shop comes from one of four things, and none of them is the thing people arrive blaming.
Salt water is the first. Sea water does not damage hair by being wet, it damages hair by drying on it, because the salt crystals left behind draw water out of the strand for the rest of the day. A rinse in fresh water at the beach is worth more than any bottle we sell.
Sweat under a scarf is the second, and it is a scalp problem rather than a hair problem. A scalp that is warm and damp for nine hours a day wants washing more often than people are told, not less, with something gentle enough to allow that.
Sun is the third and it is slow, so nobody connects it to anything. Colour lifts, ends go dry and brittle, and it happens over months.
The fourth is heat: the dryer, the straightener and the tongs. Heat is not the enemy, heat with no protection on wet hair at the highest setting is. We will show you what temperature to actually use, which on most of the tools we sell is far lower than the dial goes.
The shop in numbers
What customers say
I came in for a treatment and was told to change my shower temperature and come back in a month. She sold me nothing. I have bought everything here since.
The card with the order and the amounts on it was the first time anybody explained how much conditioner is actually meant to go on. My bottles last twice as long now.
I asked for nine recommendations for nine staff and got one routine and four products. It cost me less than half of what I had budgeted.
What people ask at the counter
How do I know which shampoo is right for me?
Tell us what your hair does on the day you wash it and what it does three days later. That pair of answers separates a scalp problem from a length problem, and they need opposite products.
If you are not sure, come in or send a photograph in daylight. There is no charge for being told that what you already own is fine.
Do you have anything for hair loss?
No, and we do not stock anything that claims to. Nothing sold over a counter in this country regrows hair, whatever is written on the bottle.
Sudden shedding, patches or a scalp that is sore belong with a doctor rather than with us. We can help with breakage, which looks like loss and is a different thing entirely, and we will tell you which one we think you have.
Can I try something before buying the big bottle?
Yes. Wherever a product comes in a small size we stock it, and for several of the treatments we will decant one application into a pot for you at no charge.
We would genuinely rather sell you a hundred millilitre bottle twice than a large one you abandon.
Why is the shelf so small?
Because everything on it is used in the salon next door, and a product only goes on after we have used it on about twenty heads over a month.
We are offered new ranges most weeks and turn down nearly all of them. If we do not have what you came for, we will say whether that is because we tried it and did not like it or because we have never used it.
Tell us what your hair is doing
Send a photograph in daylight and say what you wash with now. That is usually enough for us to say whether you need anything at all.
Ask before you spend
Say what your hair does in the first two days after washing and what it does on day four. That tells us more than a list of products ever has.
