Hirimaadhoo Council The island office: notices, services, and the people you can ask

The mosque, prayer arrangements and burials

Who maintains the mosque, the Friday arrangement, the Ramadan timetable and what the council does at a funeral.

The council maintains the two mosques, pays the water and the electricity, and works with the mosque committee on everything else.

Friday prayer is at the main mosque on Bodu Magu. The Ramadan timetable is put on the noticeboard and on this site a week before Ramadan begins, and the council arranges the extra lighting and the water at both mosques for the month.

At a funeral the council's part is practical: the burial ground, the digging, the water and the hall if the family wants it, all without charge and without paperwork. Somebody from the office is on call for this at any hour, and the number is on the noticeboard outside.

Repairs and additions to a mosque are decided with the committee and announced before work begins, because the prayer times have to be arranged around them.
